This document is still a draft. It hasn't been finalised for this deployment. Whoever runs this service needs to complete it before offering it publicly. 1 detail still to fill in is highlighted below.

Cookies and browser storage

Last updated: 20261025

The short version: one cookie, to keep you signed in. A few preferences saved in your own browser. No tracking, no advertising, no analytics.

The cookie we use

NamePurposeLifetime
sessionKeeps you signed in between page loads, and remembers which passphrase-protected share links you've unlockedUntil you sign out or close your browser

This one is strictly necessary (an account-based service can't work without a way to tell who's signed in), so it doesn't require consent and there's no way to switch it off while staying signed in.

It's set with protections against being read by scripts or sent to other sites.

Preferences stored in your browser

These use your browser's local storage rather than cookies. They never leave your device and identify nobody.

WhatWhy
Light or dark themeSo the app looks the way you chose next time
Whether the sidebar is collapsedSo panels stay how you left them
Whether the goals panel is collapsedSame
Whether the chapter list is collapsedSame
Whether you've dismissed a suggestion, such as watching your first replaySo it isn't suggested again

If you turn on end-to-end encryption, your browser also keeps the key that unlocks your writing, in its own storage (IndexedDB), so you don't have to type your password on every page. It never leaves your device. Signing out removes it.

Clearing your browser data removes them. Nothing breaks; you just get the defaults back.

What we don't do

No advertising cookies. No analytics. No tracking pixels. No fingerprinting. No third-party JavaScript.

Why there's no cookie banner

Consent is required for storage that isn't strictly necessary, chiefly tracking and advertising. There is none here. A banner asking permission for a login cookie and a dark-mode preference would be a ritual rather than a choice, so we've written down what we store instead.

If that ever changes (if analytics are added, for instance), this page will change and consent will be asked for properly, before anything loads.
